P1 Learn about Weight βοΈ
18th Nov 2025
βοΈπP1 have been busy little mathematicians this week, exploring the wonderful topic of weight! πβοΈ
We started by handling lots of different objects and talking about which ones felt heavier and which ones felt lighter. A story called Mighty Maddie helped bring the ideas to life and soon everyone was confidently using their new weight words.
Then the real fun started- using balance scales! The children experimented, predicted, compared and giggled their way through lots of hands-on challenges to see which items would tip the scales. We even learned a little rhyme to help us remember which way the scales move when objects are heavy/light and continued to use our super language associated with weight.
An amazing discussion occured when one set of scales were ‘balanced’ with objects in the pans- what does this tell us? What can we say about these objects?
So much practical learning, curiosity and so many "aha!" moments from our brilliant P1s! π
