Teach to the Beat – “One, Two, Three Little Acorns”
This week we explored the song “One, Two, Three Little Acorns” and created a rich, multi-sensory experience using a teddy squirrel and real acorns. The children enjoyed counting and exploring quantities with number cards from 1 to 12, linking numerals to amounts. One child was even able to confidently count out all 12 acorns!
Our core words of the week, “you” and “see”, were woven into the activity, with the children pointing to visuals as we sang. This supported language development, word recognition, and early reading skills. We also learned the Makaton sign for “squirrel”, helping children to connect language, movement, and meaning through song and action.
Using shakers and instruments, the children kept the beat in time with the music, developing listening, attention, and coordination skills. The sensory elements—touching the acorns, hearing the rhythm, and seeing the visuals—supported engagement and inclusion for all learners.
Through this activity, the children strengthened their communication and language, mathematical understanding, physical coordination, and sensory awareness. They also built social confidence by joining in, taking turns, and celebrating each other’s success—all while expressing joy and creativity through music and movement.
